About us

The European Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation is a small society established in 1986 by a group of European cardiacthoracic surgeons: John Wallwork, Kees Pranger and Stephan Schueler. The overriding mission is to be a leading provider of education for medical professionals involved in pulmonary hypertension, mechanical circulatory support, management of advanced heart and lung failure including transplantation. The educational goals engage learners in current practice, emerging technology and medical advances in a small format open forum to allow effective discussion and debate.

The Society is now formally established in Switzerland but little has changed since the early years in the Wengen old school classroom. The society now hosts the annual meeting in the conference room of the Hotel Regina in January of each year, in the week following the famous Lauberhorn Ski World Cup race. The format of the meeting is inclusive of young investigators, difficult case discussion, key note speakers and debates. A key feature of the meeting is the opportunity to network with colleagues from our field of medicine and surgery especially during the social programme included as part of the meeting with nightly dinners and daily sporting activities.
